Who We Are
The Independent Democratic Union is registered with the Certification Officer as a Trade Union in accordance with the provisions of the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992. We offer a modern approach to trade unionism, providing the highest quality service and advice through a highly skilled team of employment experts.
The IDU came into being in 2005 and was initially dedicated to representing employees across a range of professions with the Automobile Association. To this day, the IDU remains the only trade union recognised by the Automobile Association. However, in 2007, the IDU opened the doors of membership to individuals from any employment area. Today, we have members across a wide spectrum of employers, industries and sectors.
What We Do
Protecting your job really is our business.
We represent and support people in the workplace – whatever the employer and irrespective of whether that employer recognises trade unions. We act on behalf of members in all employment matters. We talk directly to the employer on behalf of the member where necessary, or when a member simply wants our advice, we will talk any employment matter through with them by telephone or in person at a venue convenient for them, so where direct intervention with the employer is not wanted or not appropriate for a particular issue or problem, we can simply act as a ‘sounding board’ for our member and help them to identify a solution.
Our officials are experienced in providing representation across the spectrum of jobs and employment settings. We provide a first-rate service to members and are committed to improving the working lives of members.
